About the destination: Catania is the second largest city in Sicily. Buried seven times by fierce eruptions of the Etna volcano and several earthquakes, much of its monuments have been destroyed. Nonetheless, the old town is well maintained, so much so, that it was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002. In the city center visitors will be able to enjoy the major feature of the city: its baroque architecture. The main examples are the Cathedral Square, Piazza del Duomo ,with the Elephant Fountain, the adorned Cathedral, founded in the 11th century on the ruins of the ancient baths and the impressive 13th century Ursino Castle. The remains of the Roman and Greek heritage can still be witnessed at the former Acropolis of Katane that includes the Roman Theatre, built by Greeks and reconstructed by Romans, the Odeon and the Amphitheatre. Chaotic, noisy and boisterous, Catania’s nightlife is buzzing, hundreds of bars, clubs and eateries are at hand where to get infected with the joie de vivre of the city’s population.

5. Castelmola
Stop
About the destination: Perched high above Taormina in Sicily, Castelmola is a tiny hilltop village with some of the most spectacular views on the Ionian coast. Its whitewashed houses, steep cobbled lanes and flower-filled balconies create a postcard-perfect setting, while the silhouette of Mount Etna often smokes quietly in the distance. Despite its proximity to one of Sicily’s most famous resorts, Castelmola feels worlds away—peaceful, slow-paced and decidedly less crowded. The heart of the village is Piazza Sant’Antonio, a panoramic terrace paved with traditional black-and-white lava stone. From here you can see Taormina below, the coastline stretching towards Calabria, and the endless blue of the Mediterranean. Wander the narrow streets to find small churches like the Chiesa di San Nicolò di Bari, and climb up towards the ruins of the ancient Norman castle for an even higher vantage point and unforgettable sunset views. Castelmola is also known for its quirky, welcoming bars and its local specialty: almond wine. Most cafés and small taverns offer a glass of this sweet, aromatic drink—often served chilled and sometimes flavored with herbs or citrus. The most famous spot, Bar Turrisi, is an eccentric, multi-level bar decorated with tongue-in-cheek fertility symbols, a place where you go as much for the atmosphere as for the drinks. Getting to Castelmola is part of the experience. You can hike up from Taormina on a scenic path, take the local bus that winds along hairpin bends, or drive up and park just outside the village. Once you arrive, everything is easily explored on foot. Plan to spend at least half a day: wander the alleys, stop for an espresso or almond granita, linger over a long lunch with a view, and simply soak up the quiet charm of one of Sicily’s most enchanting hill towns.

About the destination: Syracuse was the greatest of Sicily’s Grecian cities, at one time rivalled only by Athens. Its sites are better than many in Greece. Hot and dry, this provincial capital encapsulates Sicily's timeless beauty. Go to the island of Ortigia, the lovely historic centre, for the Temples of Apollo and Athena. The latter, now the city’s cathedral, has a richly embellished baroque façade, added in the 18th century. Across the street, the Museo Archeologico Nozionale has some exceptional Greek vases. Another museum in the Palazzo Bellomo has a superb collection of paintings and sculpture, amid miniature courtyards, fountains and elegant stairways. For the big sights, travel across town to the archaeological park, Neapolis. Here is the Greek theatre, where classical Greek plays still perform. The many well-preserved reminders of its ancient glory make Syracuse a city of lingering and romance.

About the destination: Noto, often called the “Stone Garden of Sicily,” is a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1693, the town was carefully planned with wide, sun‑drenched streets and elegant palazzi that glow honey‑gold at sunset. Strolling along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you’ll encounter a harmonious sequence of churches, monasteries, and noble residences, culminating in the spectacular Noto Cathedral with its sweeping staircase and limestone façade. The joy of visiting Noto lies in wandering without a strict agenda. Step through ornate doorways into quiet courtyards, peek into richly decorated churches like San Domenico, and climb up to viewpoints for panoramic vistas over the town and surrounding countryside. At dusk, the subdued street lighting accentuates balconies, statues, and architectural details, creating a romantic atmosphere perfect for an evening passeggiata and an aperitivo at an outdoor café. Beyond its architectural treasures, Noto offers a taste of authentic Sicilian life. The town is renowned for its pastry shops, where you can sample traditional cannoli, granita with brioche, and almond‑based sweets made from locally grown nuts. Nearby beaches such as Lido di Noto and the unspoiled Vendicari Nature Reserve provide an easy escape to clear waters and quiet coves, ideal for a relaxing day trip. Noto also serves as a convenient base for exploring southeastern Sicily. From here, you can visit other Baroque gems like Ragusa and Modica, or head inland to discover lesser‑known villages and vineyards. Whether you’re interested in architecture, food, or simply a slower pace of travel, Noto combines cultural richness with the laid‑back charm that makes Sicily so captivating.

About the destination: Easily reachable from Catania, Ragusa, capital of the same named province, is a nice town set on multiple hills of the Hyblaean Mountains. Ragusa, a modern city with a beautiful historic core, is known for some great local red wines and its wonderful cheese, the Ragusano. The city is divided in two parts the old Ragusa Ibla and new Ragusa. Old Ragusa was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, and it preserves an important sample of baroque architecture. Ragusa's historic centre is quite magnificent with its tangled alleyways, grey stone houses and baroque palazzi. In this part of town we find the Duomo di San Giorgio. With its large neo-Classical dome lit by blue stained-glass windows and surrounded by Corinthian columns, the church can be distinguished from afar. Close up, it is the superb flight of stairs which attracts the visitor's eye to the elegant and harmonious pink façade. Pretty sculpted motifs decorate the doorway and enhance the depiction of St George slaying the dragon with his lance. Alongside the church is the small Museo del Duomo, a museum containing stone statues and reliefs from the original pre-earthquake San Giorgio and other churches, architectural drawings by Gagliardo, some extravagant reliquaries and gloomy religious paintings. Ragusa Ibla has a large number of trattorias and restaurants, bars, coffee shops, pubs and clubs. Representing the modern Ragusa we have the Marina di Ragusa a famous seaside resort, with long beaches of golden sand, where you can find restaurants and busy clubs and lounge bars that are popular with tourists and locals alike. Ragusa offers many options to enjoy La Dolce Vita.

About the destination: Palermo Province, stretching along the northern coast of Sicily, is a rich tapestry of cultures, flavors, and landscapes. Its capital, Palermo city, dazzles with Norman-Arab architecture, lively markets, and a theatrical street life that spills from baroque piazzas into narrow alleys. Wander through the majestic Palermo Cathedral, the glittering Palatine Chapel inside the Royal Palace, and the historic quarters of Kalsa and Vucciria, where crumbling palazzi and hip bars coexist with fishmongers’ shouts and church bells. Beyond the city, the province offers a dramatic coastline of sandy beaches and rocky coves. Cefalù, one of the region’s jewels, combines a postcard-perfect medieval center with a long golden beach and a towering rock, La Rocca, that promises panoramic views to those who hike it. Further west, the seaside village of Mondello lures locals and visitors with its Art Nouveau villas, turquoise waters, and a relaxed resort atmosphere perfect for sunset strolls and gelato. Inland, the Madonie Mountains reveal a different face of Palermo Province—one of quiet hilltop villages, chestnut forests, and cool air even in high summer. Towns like Castelbuono and Petralia Soprana are ideal for slow travel: wander stone streets, visit small churches, and sample local cheeses, cured meats, and the famous manna, a natural sweet sap used in traditional confectionery. This rural heartland is also great for hiking, birdwatching, and agriturismo stays. Food is an essential part of any trip to Palermo Province. Street food stands sell arancine, sfincione (thick Sicilian pizza), panelle (chickpea fritters), and, for the adventurous, pani cà meusa (spleen sandwich). Sweet-toothed travelers should seek out cannoli and cassata in historic pastry shops. Combined with local wines from around Alcamo, vibrant festivals, and a welcoming local culture, the province offers a complete Sicilian experience that reaches far beyond the city limits.

About the destination: Palermo, the vibrant capital of Sicily, is a city where layers of history, architecture, and culture overlap at every corner. Founded by the Phoenicians, shaped by the Arabs, Normans, and Spanish, it offers a unique mix you can see in its golden mosaics, baroque churches, and lively street markets. Wandering its streets, you’ll pass crumbling palazzi next to elegant theatres, hidden courtyards, and small shrines tucked into alley walls. It’s chaotic, noisy, and utterly captivating. Start in the historic center with the Norman Palace and its dazzling Palatine Chapel, where Byzantine mosaics shimmer in gold. From there, stroll to the Cathedral of Palermo, a masterpiece that blends Arab-Norman, Gothic, and Baroque elements in one structure. Explore the Quattro Canti crossroads and nearby Piazza Pretoria, famous for its dramatic fountain adorned with statues. Don’t miss the churches of La Martorana and San Cataldo, another perfect expression of Palermo’s Arab-Norman heritage and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Palermo’s soul truly reveals itself in its markets. Ballarò, Vucciria, and Capo overflow with fresh produce, seafood, and street food, accompanied by the singsong calls of vendors. Try local specialties like arancine (fried rice balls), panelle (chickpea fritters), sfincione (thick Sicilian pizza), and cannoli filled with sweet ricotta. In the evening, dine at a trattoria in the old town, then join locals for a passeggiata, a leisurely stroll along Via Maqueda or down to the seafront. Use Palermo as a base to discover the surrounding area: the seaside town of Mondello with its sandy beach, the dramatic cliffs of Monte Pellegrino, and the archaeological site of Segesta are all within easy reach. Whether you’re drawn by art and history, food and wine, or simply the pleasure of getting lost in atmospheric streets, Palermo offers an intense, authentic taste of Sicily that lingers long after you’ve left.

About the destination: When it comes to seeing the sights in Cefalu, every corner holds nothing but beauty and absolute grace. The fishing port that is actually quite ancient is dominated by a magnificent Norman cathedral that is huddled right below the Rocca, which is a large limestone crag. Cefalu has something that everyone can enjoy, whether it’s a day at the beach watching the water, or wandering around taking in all the sights. One of the best things to see in Cefalu in the Festa di San Salvatore that takes place during the first weekend of August, from the 4th to the 6th. Hundreds of men participate in the traditional barefoot dash, the Corsa degil Scalzi, between San Salvatore and Cabras. The run itself is spread over a two day period, and commemorates the episode during 1506, where all the townspeople rushed to save a statue in San Salvatore. This statue was from the Moorish sea raiders, and was the Holy Savior. There are many traditions in Cefalu, Italy, but the most popular one is the Ntinna a Mari. This is one of the most exciting things to see while in Cefalu, because all of the residents love participating. Cefalu is famous for their fishing ports, which is something to see in itself, but this tradition is something that should never be missed while visiting or living there. These events begin on the Saturday, everyone participating is dressed in white and barefoot, and accompany the statue that is along eight kilometers of paths that leads to San Salvatore. However, this portion is just the halfway point. The day after, they go backwards and take the statue all the way back to Cabras, so it can be kept safe in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. This festival is extremely important to the people of Cefalu, and is not one that should be missed
