1. Johannesburg
Stop
About the destination: Johannesburg is the port of entry for the majority of tourists visiting South Africa and its largest city. First time visitors may also not be aware that Johannesburg and Pretoria are only 60km from each other, but the two cities are worlds apart, and the contrast is fascinating. South Africa's largest city is cosmopolitan, quirky and vibrant with glorious weather and friendly people. One of Johannesburg endearing characteristics is that it is a truly international and very cosmopolitan place. Johannesburg is unapologetically and unmistakably African with enough First World infrastructure to make for comfortable tourism. Newtown and the Market Theatre area are the city's cultural precinct. Braamfontein, the university area, has a great Saturday market, lively night life, is very artsy. Don’t miss the stunning Apartheid Museum. The most well-known and celebrated of South Africa's townships is Soweto, the sprawling mix of shanty town and formal housing estates that lies approximately 30km outside of Johannesburg in Gauteng. Johannesburg offers lots of interesting and often quirky things to do, be willing to scratch beneath the surface and you'll find enough to happily occupy a few days and provide excellent context to help you understand the turbulent history that has made South Africa what it is today.

About the destination: Tucked into the cool, misty highlands of central Eswatini, Mhlambanyatsi is a small forestry town that feels a world away from the country’s hotter, busier lowveld. Surrounded by rolling green hills, pine plantations, and patches of indigenous forest, it offers a refreshing escape for travelers looking for peace, nature, and outdoor activities rather than nightlife or crowds. The climate here is noticeably cooler and wetter than in much of the country, making it a pleasant retreat in the hotter months. The town is best known as a gateway to nearby nature reserves and hiking areas. Just a short drive away, you’ll find scenic trails that wind through forests, past streams, and up to viewpoints with sweeping panoramas of the countryside. Birdwatchers are rewarded with a variety of species, and early morning walks often come with a symphony of birdsong and drifting mist. Mountain biking and trail running are also popular pursuits, with a network of tracks suitable for different fitness levels. Accommodation options in and around Mhlambanyatsi tend to be small-scale and intimate, ranging from simple guesthouses to country lodges nestled among the trees. Many places emphasize a homely atmosphere, with fireplaces, hearty meals, and opportunities to relax after a day outdoors. You won’t find big shopping malls here, but you can pick up basic supplies in local shops and sometimes buy crafts or produce from nearby communities. Mhlambanyatsi also makes a good base for exploring central Eswatini. Within an hour’s drive you can reach the capital, Mbabane, for markets and cafés, or divert to cultural attractions and more established game reserves. Returning to Mhlambanyatsi in the late afternoon, as the clouds settle over the hills and the temperature drops, highlights the town’s main charm: a tranquil highland atmosphere that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy the landscape.
